Sluice (2009) by Kate MccGwire.

Kate MccGwire graduated from the Royal College of Art (London) in 2004 and has since exhibited all over London, winning a solo show at 2009's Heart of Glass. Her most recent installations are made from thousands of pigeon feathers, flowing water and even a mouldy growth on a wall.

Here Is Always Somewhere Else, the critically acclaimed documentary about enigmatic Dutchartist Bas Jan Ader (1942-1975), whose daring conceptual performances culminated in his mysterious disappearance at sea. As recounted through the eyes of fellow emigrant Rene Daalder, Ader's story becomes a sweeping overview of contemporary art as well as an epic saga of the trans-formative powers of the ocean.

I sometimes wish that one day I'll have enough courage to make a final piece as beautifull and awe inspiring as he did in this work.

Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute recently solved the half-century-old mystery of a fish with tubular eyes and a transparent head. Ever since the "barreleye" fish Macropinna microstoma was first described in 1939, marine biologists have known that it's tubular eyes are very good at collecting light. However, the eyes were believed to be fixed in place and seemed to provide only a "tunnel-vision" view of whatever was directly above the fish's head. A new paper by Bruce Robison and Kim Reisenbichler shows that these unusual eyes can rotate within a transparent shield that covers the fish's head. This allows the barreleye to peer up at potential prey or focus forward to see what it is eating. It had been difficult to figure out what these fish actually looked like in life because catching them and keeping them in tact were mutually exclusive, until recently...

Most existing descriptions and illustrations of this fish do not show its fluid-filled shield, probably because this fragile structure was destroyed when the fish were brought up from the deep in nets. However, Robison and Reisenbichler were extremely fortunate, they were able to bring a net-caught barreleye to the surface alive, where it survived for several hours in a ship-board aquarium. Within this controlled environment, the researchers were able to confirm what they had seen in the ROV video--the fish rotated its tubular eyes as it turned its body from a horizontal to a vertical position.

Hugh Piper is a documentary filmmaker and writer whose work has screened in festivals and appeared on most international television networks.

I saw his documentary Cracking The Colour Code, and thought it was brilliant. The way he was taking a multi disciplinary approach to examining the science, anthropology, history and philosophy of colour.

Mountaineering is the sport, hobby or profession of walking, hiking, backpacking and climbing mountains. In Europe it is also referred to as alpinism, while in the Americas the term refers to a particular style of mountain climbing, that involves a mixture of ice climbing, rock climbing, mixed climbing, and where the climbers carry all their loads with them at all times. In the Himalayan regions the style of mountaineering is Expedition. While mountaineering began as attempts to reach the highest point of unclimbed mountains, it has branched into specializations that address different aspects of the mountain and consists of three areas : rock-craft, snow-craft and skiing, depending on whether the route chosen is over rock, snow or ice. All require experience, athletic ability, and technical knowledge to maintain safety.
